History of Suspenders
Suspenders count years of history in our wardrobes. Nowadays, they serve more as a fashion statement piece to uplift any of your outfits, however, back in the day they used to be a very functional piece in every person‘s closet.
It all started in 18th century when suspenders were invented to be worn as undergarments. First-known suspenders were ribbons tied to buttonholes, but first modern version was created from tightly woven wool, boxcloth. Men’s fashion of the day called for extremely high-waisted pants that couldn’t be held by a belt, so British fashion designer, Albert Thurston, created an H-back design that was attached with leather loops. Only later he modified them to feature both the commonly found X- and Y-back designs.
Further on, wonderful invention of metal suspender clips was created and this way special buttons on the pants were not needed anymore. What is surprising, is that doctors used to recommend posture, exercise and the wearing of suspenders for all patients. However, with time belts became more popular than suspenders which were slowly going out of fashion.
As per women, working women adopted suspenders unisex look by Annie Hall only in the 1970s. In the 2000s, it became fashionable again for some younger women to wear suspenders. A style emerged from Mod subculture in the late 1960s through to punk rock and skinhead styles of the late 1970s into the 1980s. Finally with time suspenders became a fashion statement regardless of the gender which uplifts the whole outfit and gives it some class.
